Funded by the Sustainable Development Fund, the 2-year project Action Model for Sustainable Development in Long Valley was launched in 2005. The project focused on sustainable development, facilitating and integrating the sustainable development with respect to the local community, economy and environment in the villages around Long Valley.The project objectives include:
- Conserving and enhancing the long-term ecological value in Long Valley;
- Facilitating development of sense of belonging and bonding of local communities;
- Promoting educational valueof and supporting conservation researches and training in freshwater wetland;
- Develop Long Valley into an eco-tourism hotspot and create more job opportunities.
Sustainable development was reached through organizing programs which facilitate development of sense of belonging and bonding of local communities, with examples like Mikania removal activity, rubbish cleaning program and fung shui wood forest enhancement work etc. At the same time, we improve traditional farming practice and promote related eco- and cultural tourism and green markets, facilitating the development of local economy as well as increasing job opportunities for local communities. With the wide range of ecological studies and monitoring work, more detailed information on the biodiversity and potential threats in Long Valley have been collected, which help plan and implement conservation works in Long valley in the future.Training and education were provided for local communities as well as to help improve the ecological value in Long Valley.
