The Woodside at Quarry Bay was marked for building 18,000 flats under the Home Ownership Scheme in 1998. As the site is very near Tai Tam Country Park (Quarry Bay Extension), over 300 trees would be affected, and so are the bats living there and a nearly 100-year-old red brick house.
In order to protect this piece of woodland, CA urged the Town Planning Board to zone it as “Green Belt” and staged a “Green Ribbon Campaign.” Our rezoning application was accepted in the TPB meeting on 25th September 1998 and the construction plan was cancelled. On 20th August 1998, we wrote to the Antiquities Advisory Board, urging them to grade the red brick house. The house was later conferred a status of Grade II historical building.
The Woodside is now a biodiversity education centre under the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
