Eco-Protectors Programme Summary 2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity. As a member of the UN’s Green Wave Campaign, CA launched the Eco-Protectors programme to promote biodiversity to schools. Eco-Protectors is a tree planting programme aiming at promoting local biodiversity in schools, enhance the knowledge and concern to biodiversity among students through planting local native plants. During October 2010 and February 2011, participating schools reserved an area in their campus and planted local native plants there. Students performed growth measurements and health monitoring on regular basis. They also promoted messages of biodiversity in school. The programme finished in March 2011. 155 students from 10 primary and secondary schools participated. Participating schools included: Our Lady’s Colleague、Toi Shan Association College、Tin Shui Wai Methodist Primary School、Tsuen Wan Catholic Primary School、Bonham Road Government Primary School、HKMA David Li Kwok Po College、NWCSS Nam Wah Catholic Secondary School、CNEC Lau Wing Sang Secondary School、De La Salle Secondary School, N.T.and Fung Kai Innovative School.A total of 108 native plant seedlings were planted in those schools. The species included: Diospyros vaccinioides : 11; Ardisia hanceana: 10; Garcinia oblongifolia: 11; Euonymus nitidus: 11; Gardenia jasminoides: 14; Ligustrum amamianum: 20; Psychotria asiatica: 17; Melastoma candidum: 17; Ilex rotunda: 1; Syzygium hancei: 1; Garcinia multiflora: 2; Phyllanthus emblica: 1 Information of Eco-Protectors had been uploaded to the UN’s website: http://greenwave.cbd.int/en/home |

Furthermore, students had field trips to different habitats to get to know more about our habitats and biodiversity. Those field visits were conducted in Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, a rather mature secondary forest; Long Valley, the largest agricultural wetland in Hong Kong; and Nam Sang Wai, an important habitat for migratory birds. |
