Together with the Yunnan Green Environmental Development Foundation, CA and Hang Seng Bank have been continuously working on the “Biogas Toilet” Renewable Energy Project in Yunnan From 2007 to 2015 in various Yunnan counties. A total of 4,600 biogas facilities consisting of pig barns, methane pools, toilets, methane lights and cooking facilities have been installed for the farmhouses, benefiting 18,000 local villagers in the process

 

 

When organic wastes are gathered in a confined space under specific temperature, humidity and pH value, a fermentation process will begin, producing biogas. Biogas is flammable and it can be used for cooking and lighting with suitable pipes, stoves and lighting equipments. In Yunnan, manure generated by a family of four with one pig will be collected in a closed, underground methane pool via pipes. The Biogas produced will be able to satisfy the daily consumption of a same-sized family.

 

The Project helped preserved 10,400 tons of firewood and reduced more than 52,000 tons of carbon. It was awarded the Gold Award in 2012 at the 10^th annual China Golden Awards for Excellence in Public Relations.
