Background
Hong Kong has a surprisingly high biodiversity, particularly the number of different bird species. It’s not very well known that Hong Kong possesses three times more native animals and plants than the British Isles. Though tiny with 1048 km2 only, Hong Kong houses 480 species of birds, which is 38% of the bird species of China. The unique habitat conditions of Deep Bay area provides good living environment to more than 300 species of birds. The area has been known as a paradise for birds, attracting tens of thousands of birds every year.
Inner Deep Bay is a well-recognized important natural asset to Hong Kong. To effectively protect this piece of important wetland, inspiring and enhancing the conservation awareness of young generations is critical. With such an aim in mind, CA started the ‘Ramsar Site Conservation Project’ in 1997, with the support of AFCD. The popular school programme ‘Dancing with Birds’ was a flagship annual programme under this project.
The ‘Ramsar Site Conservation Project’ finished successfully in 2005 but the ‘Dancing with Birds’ programme continued for several years. Every year, different activities relating to birds, such as ‘Bird Hat Design Competition’, ‘Bird Model Making Compeition’ and ‘Birds Drawing Competition’, were launched to attract students and bring up their interest to birds and the nature.
Aims
Through the participation in those fun and challenging competitions, the message of protecting wetlands could be delivered to participants, their friends and also families.
To encourage students to observe and understand the nature, appreciate and cherish the components of the nature and bring inspirations to creations through more understanding of birds and their ecological environment.
