Despite designation of 40% land area as Country Park and control of rural land through Town Planning Ordinance, various forms of eco-vandalism, such as dumping of construction and demolition waste, improper tree pruning and felling, disturbance to wildlife habitat, unauthorized development, and so on, still exist in frequent. Through regular site visit, liaison with stakeholders, such as green groups and local concern parties, we will report cases to related government departments. To avoid deterioration of environmental damage, we also review problems in existing regulations and mechanisms and push for amending law and strengthening enforcement power.

Map of Devastated Nature and Rural Sites
The Conservancy Association’s Map of Devastated Nature and Rural Sites in Hong Kong was launched on 30th March 2009. The map lists sites which have been trashed or threatened by development since the announcement of New Nature Conservation Policy in 2004. The forms of destructions includes fly-tipping, illegal tree felling, unauthorised development and land use. Some of these destructions even take place among the 12 Priority Sites for Enhanced Conservation. Such cases were more than enough to prove that the New Nature Conservation Policy could not safeguard Hong Kong’s natural environment.
Sites listed on the map are just a tip of the iceberg. If the Government just keep pursuing the current policy, further environmental destruction will continue to damage our valuable natural assets.
