Long Valley, located in the North West of the New Territories, is a natural floodplain between Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung River. Owingto the continuous active farming practices since 200 years ago, Long Valley becomes the large stactive fresh water agricultural wetland habitat in Hong Kong, serving as an important breeding site for animals, especially birds and amphibians.
Long Valley became well-knownin Hong Kong when the KCR proposed building the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line , passing through the wetland. After this incident, a joint project called“Nature Conservation Management for Long Valley”, supported by The Environmental and Conservation Fund (ECF), was born. It aims at enhancing the conservation value of this piece of freshwater wetland (withbirdsbeing the focus) through a management agreement scheme between The Conservancy Association(CA),the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society(HKBWS)and the local farming community. The project started in March 2008.
