1. Surplus food recovery summary & updates
CA’s food sharing scheme, the Food Resources Recycling Centre (FRRC), was established in July 2013 and sponsored by the Environment and Conservation Fund since August 2014. We aim to encourage more people to participate in food waste reduction and give back to the community through mutual help and sharing! As of the end of June 2018, 232 tons of fresh and packaged food has been recovered by FRRC, which benefited over 110,000 people.
2. Food-Wise Carnival
The Food-Wise Carnival was successfully completed on June 30th! The event was affected by heavy showers at the beginning but fortunately the rain had subsided throughout the afternoon. In the end, more than 300 participants were reached which was more than our expectations given the circumstance!
The waste reduction info booth, “after best food” taste test, food waste enzyme workshop and food-wise booth games were very popular that day. Residents of various ages were able to learn more about food-wise facts and messages, waste reduction methods, the difference between “best before date” and “expiry date” as well as the many uses of food waste enzyme through the interactions.
It was also wonderful to see many of FRRC’s food receivers at the carnival. We have limited opportunity to spread the food-wise messages during FRRC’s busy daily work and we hope the activity can promote the messages further and also express our sincere gratitude for the community’s involvement and contributions in our food sharing scheme.
Last but not least, we would like to thank all the volunteers and locals for participating in the Food-Wise Carnival!
