For the long-term urban tree conservation and management, this programme is co-organized by the Working Group on Urban Greening and Tree Management under the Sham Shui Po District Council and The Conservancy Association (CA), which aims to establish a database for the trees along main streets in the district. The programme also invites the public to participate in the tree survey and workshops, so as to appreciate and learn about trees in the community.
The programme started with a lecture entitled “Tree conservation and risk management”, which was delivered by the Chief Executive of CA, Mr. So Kwok Yin, Ken on 14 November 2020. Due to popular demand, the lecture was delivered physically as well as online via Facebook live. The lecture introduced the principles and basic methodology of tree risk assessment, and also explained the importance of trees to the community. The link accessing the online live is currently available (https://bit.ly/3pwEfca) for those who missed the lecture.
The second part of the programme was three “Tree surveyor training” workshops. The Workshop consists of a lecture in the morning follow by a site visit in the afternoon where those accomplished the training could join the staff of CA to conduct tree survey along main streets in Sham Shui Po District. Nevertheless, in view of the development of coronavirus epidemic, online lectures were conducted instead while site visits in the afternoon were canceled due to the prohibition of group gathering. In spite of the changes of plan, details of the tree survey, the major tree species along the main street in the district as well as their problems faced when establishing along streets were delivered by Ken in detail.
Due to the coronavirus epidemic, we have to rearrange the schedule of training and tree survey; yet, we are still hoping to get all of you involve in this meaningful programme. We are also going to launch another lecture in March 2021 to share the results upon completion of the tree survey. For more information and updated news, please follow our Facebook and Instagram.
