In 2008-2018, there were over 1,000 cases of hill fires and around 20 cases happened inside or threatened Country Parks each year. Near 300 hectares of woodland (equivalent to 15 Victoria Parks in area) has been destroyed in the first quarter of this year. It takes 10-20 years for seedlings to grow, yet, hill fires burn off vegetation and wildlife habitat overnight.
“A lot of times you don't choose to hold on because there is hope; you held on, and so there is hope.” This year marks the 15th anniversary of “No Hill Fire in Chung Yeung Festival”. With HK Electric’s continued support, we will continue to disseminate hill fire prevention messages to the public via newspaper advertisement, social media and other platforms.
