The Used Clothes Collection program has been established by The Conservancy Association since 2000. The main objectives of the scheme are to reduce textile wastage by providing schools, housing estates and the community with a used clothes collection platform; and encourage people to donate their clothes for reuse. As an environmental group, we encouraged the whole community to actively support used clothes collection, while reusing and recycling locally as much as possible. For instance, before we choose to donate clothing, we should first consider giving them away to relatives or friends so as to reduce the carbon and greenhouse gas emission from transportation.Currently, a total of 94 housing estates are currently enrolled in the Used Clothes Collection – Get Fund Scheme. Reward points accumulated from the collection of used clothes could be reimbursed as eco-friendly gifts, eco-tours or educational activities to raise public awareness on environmental protection.
Learning Through Play
A variety of environmental education activities were held by CA last summer. Do you know there is organic paddy farming in Hong Kong (at Long Valley, Sheung Shui)? Our drama “Party in the Paddy Field” adopts a highly-interactive approach to illustrate traditional rice farming practices, ecological value of Long Valley and the current dilemma concerning rural conservation and local agriculture to its young audience. Theyall learnt with pleasure through their emotions, intellectuality, and body.
Apart from thekindergarten activities, we have also designed some upcycling workshops which are suitable for all ages to promote the idea of upcycling - What does “upcycling” mean you ask?Actually, upcycling refers tomaximizethe utility of recyclablematerials with the least consumption of them. The participants showed great enthusiasm for the workshop and they look forward to join more upcycling workshops of similar nature in the future!
The kids were imitating the process of rice transplanting!
Via “Glass etching Workshop”, recycled glass containers can be reused further beyond its original purpose.
