Summer Interns joining FRRC
Exciting news! Two energetic interns are joining FRRC this summer and our helpers and locals enjoy seeing young bloods in our centre. By participating in our food recovery work in wet-markets, we believe our interns would gain a first-hand experience and deeper understanding on the food waste issue in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, it is a great opportunity to equip themselves with some practical food handling skills and learn how to utilize surplus food. Also, a crucial part of our work is to communicate and facilitate ideas exchange with locals, which helps us deliver a service that also fulfills their needs.
During the summer, our interns will prepare workshops on upcycling surplus food and creating a new purpose for leftovers. We hope to get more locals involve via our educational activities and promote the concept of green living in the community. We are very much looking forward to our interns bringing new ideas to our center and sharing the experiences with their friends and families.
Recent activities and updates
FRRC held two surplus food recovery activities in the past three months, welcoming volunteers from the St John's Cathedral Life Enrichment Centre and the Bank of East Asia Volunteer Team. Participants were surprised by the seriousness of the food waste issue when we pointed out there are more than 3,600 tons of food waste going to the landfills every day which imposes a heavy burden on our environment. Participants not only asked questions about this issue, but also actively engaged in the recovery work after the discussion.
In addition to our community activities, we visited the working space and warehouse of our close partner, Feeding Hong Kong. They have connected a number of enterprises or organizations who wish to donate, and then paired up with organizations or food banks in need, serving as a B2B surplus food network. During the visit, not only did we gain more understanding in their work flow, but were also amused by their computerized barcode system, which allows for efficient sorting, storage as well as transferring surplus food in & out of the facility. It was an amazing meet up for both teams to share the difficulties and joy involved in surplus food recovery and we hope to keep on working closely to save more food in the future.
