CA and Coca-Cola China Foundation Limited have jointly launched the “Pilot Scheme for Green Events” in 2018. It aims to develop a tailor-made green strategy plan, implement waste reduction measures and strive to minimize environmental impacts for large-scale activities. The scheme successfully cooperated with 9 event organizers with more than 30,000 pieces of plastic and disposable products being reduced in the end.
On 9th May, CA organized a sharing cum award presentation ceremony to show our gratitude and appreciation to the 9 partners. Guests from The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association (HKAAA), Run Our City (ROC) and Environmental Protection Department (EPD) were invited onto the stage to share their experience, which attracted over 60 representatives from more than 30 organizations to participate in the event. From the sharing, it was not difficult to understand that during the planning and execution stages of event waste management, stakeholders such as organizers, volunteers, participants, venue owner and recyclers all needed to work closely together with each other. Difference in pace from any party may affect the outcome, or even lead to a total failure.
Hong Kong famous long-distance runner, Christy YIU, also came to support us and share her interesting racing experiences in foreign countries! She mentioned about the use of reusable plastic cups in a race held in Paris that the organizer had arranged numerous amount of large collection bins extended in line from the water station. The lids were opened and attached with “arrow targets” to indicate where the cups should go. The cup would bounce into the bin by hitting the target and it was really environmentally-friendly and efficient! Christy believed that racers would be pleased to follow organizer’s arrangements that could truly accommodate their needs. She laughed and claimed that the “cup dropping game” was fun yet refreshing to the racers.
CA has also launched “The Guidelines to Green Event” (The Guidelines) on the same day. It comprises of 6 booklets namely “Street Run”, “Trail Run”, “Walk”, “Orienteering”, “Carnival” and “Food Carnival”. Organizers are welcome to look up the relevant sections according to event nature. The Guidelines also gives advices on waste amount estimation, communication with stakeholders, points to note during preparation stage, recycling arrangement on event day and post-event evaluation. Event organizers must not miss out the true failure stories and lessons learnt in the “10 Unrepeatable Mistakes” section!
