Jolly Christmas
During the joyful Christmas, FRRC prepared a Christmas gift parcel for our partnered wet-market stall owners to acknowledge their continuous support to our surplus food recovery work. Some donated packaged food was included in the parcels and it is amazing to connect different parties of the program with food recovered by the FRRC.
Apart from Lei Muk Shue and Shek Lei wet markets, we have expanded our surplus food recovery program to Tsing Yi wet market in early 2018. Our newly joined stall owners are filled with enthusiasm and not shy to show our partnership poster at their stalls. It is refreshing to see the growth of the “food wise” concept in the community over a relatively short period. Lastly, our food recycling work would not be as easy without their generous support. We sincerely appreciate their help and participation.
Also, FRRC would like to thank Feeding Hong Kong for preparing Christmas gift parcels for our food receivers to share the joy of the festival. The Christmas gift parcels were slightly different from our regular recovered food, which were welcomed by FRRC’s receivers prior to the Chinese New Year.
Chinese New Year Food Donation 2019
During Chinese New Year, gift-giving is a tradition when visiting our beloved family and friends. Yet when you are shopping for New Year gifts, do you feel overwhelmed by the mountains of chocolates and cookies in the supermarkets? And for those who received packages of chocolate, we believe you probably are worried about how to deal with the left-overs.
In fact, it is easy to fall into the trap of buying gifts for the sake of gifting, without considering the needs and liking of the receivers. As a result, a large amount of unwanted gifts may end up in the landfill during the festive season. According to the data from last year, food recycling organizations recovered 3,000 sets of New Year gift while chocolates accounted for the majority of donation. In other words, it may imply that chocolate is not as “sought after” as we imagine.
So rather than buying generic cookies and chocolate gift sets, why not take the initiative to ask the potential receiver(s) “what would you love to receive”? Then the receivers can truly enjoy your gifts and will definitely appreciate your thoughtfulness. Should you run out of ideas, there are always healthier and eco-friendlier alternatives, like locally produced pastries, noodles or veggie baskets with minimal package.
But if you received or cannot finish all your New Year gifts, FRRC would be glad to receive your food donation and share with our food receivers. Nevertheless, the most effective method is to reduce waste by practicing “conscious buying” and leave no food waste during this joyful Chinese New Year!
