Last November, FRRC organized two wet market food recovery experiential activities for two volunteer teams from HKUST Connect and Rotary Youth Service Group of the University of Hong Kong Student Union. Surplus food recovery is not an easy task. The volunteer teams accompanied the centre staff, pushing trolleys with plastic boxes with lids to collect food from the Lei Muk Shue wet market at night. Recovering food is highly labor-intensive work. Each plastic box filled with food may weigh more than 30kg, and at least two people are required to pick up the plastic box full of food.
After collecting the surplus food from the wet market, FRRC staff guided the volunteer teams to conduct inspections based on the quality of the food to ensure all food items are meeting the center’s distribution and food safety standards. The volunteer team distributed the food to the registered recipients and reminded them to eat it as soon as possible.
After finishing the food distribution, the volunteer team followed the center's cleaning routine to clean all recycling tools and the center space to maintain good hygiene and a clean workplace.
The food recovery experiential activity was completed within 3 hours. The volunteer teams were deeply impressed by the whole process, including the support of our wet market partners in surplus food recovery, FRRC staff's dedication in keeping the recycling tools and workplace clean while helping those in need through a low-carbon food waste reduction and sharing platform.
