As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in Hong Kong, restrictions on public gatherings have limited the number of participants and the frequency of face-to-face educational activities like recycling booths and workshops. Promotion through TV shows and online platforms was adopted for the second year to show the general public how to be more eco-conscious when celebrating the Chinese New Year in different aspects and promote the Chinese New Year Festive Food Recycling Program. We hope to inspire people to enjoy the festivals in an eco-friendly way, raise the public’s awareness of food waste reduction and cultivate proper food handling and the food-wise habit in daily life.
FRRC launched the Chinese New Year Festive Food Recycling Program two weeks before the Chinese New Year Festival. FRRC recovered nearly 1628kg of festive food; 92% of the Festive Food was recovered before the Chinese New Year this year. With the increased awareness of “food-wise”, festive foods manufacturers and people were willing to assess whether there would be excess early. They took the initiative to send the festive foods to FRRC for people in need in the community before the Chinese New year festival. We want to thank the organizations and citizens who have participated in promoting Chinese New Year Festive Food Recycling for supporting us in the community. We not only distributed the festive food to our registered beneficiaries of FRRC, but we also distributed the festive food to two District Council offices. We donate festive food to more people in need and help the community through these organizations. More people are sharing the joy of the holiday.
Unfortunately, some organizations have suspended their Chinese New Year Food Recovery Program participation due to the fifth wave of Coronavirus outbreaks.
