Scout Association of Hong Kong has held the "Tai Tam Golden Jubilee Day" at Tai Tam Scout Centre from 30th September (Friday) to 2nd October (Sunday). It is CA’s pleasure to cooperate with the Scout Association of Hong Kong again. A three-day used clothes collection activity was held during the event and some environmental related booths were set up on 2nd October. Participants could learn more about environmental issues in the textile industry through the booth activities.
On that day, we set up three booths, with one of them introducing the knowledge of pollution and water consumption from garment production. There were some game props in the booth, including several scales made of cardboard. A piece of clothing was placed on one side of the scale while the other side were some dolls made of cardboard, representing the daily water intake of 100 scouts. By placing and balancing the clothing and paper dolls on the scale, participants were able to realize how many litters of water were needed to grow the cotton for producing one piece of clothing. The junior scouts were fascinated by the scale game. They also listened patiently to our staff explaining the information about water pollution caused by dyeing clothes, and thus the importance of treasuring the clothes they had. In addition, we also set up a dining table displaying some upcycled items as a demonstration of how used clothes, which were meant to be discarded, could be turned into useful items such as bags for carrying water bottles or food containers. This was to encourage them to boost their creativity and spend more thoughts to put environmental protection concepts into practice.
In the end, a total of 540 pieces of clothes were collected in this event. The clothes collected will be exported to Southeast Asian countries for reuse. CA would like to thank all the scouts for their active participation. We look forward to conducting more related activities in the future to share more knowledge about clothing and waste reduction with the public!
